It begins as the first step of a journey with the first contact of paint
on a clean canvas. A deliberate move or random, moving in
structure or in rebellion, willed yet intuited, in all a revelation of the
artist's inner sense. As much a discovery to the artist as to the
viewer. Corporeal forms of grotesque proportions erupting in
fiery reds and soothed by turquoise shades of the most calming
sun-lit waters. A blur of green fields and orange poppies broken
by a long fall into a funnel of darkness. A dog, out of nowhere,
snapping at an insect. A waiter, cigarette dangling from the mouth,
lifting himself from inside an open keg of beer. A woman, leaning
to touch a boat. A shoe falling from a tree. Images from...where?
A mind's-eye slideshow of unsolved mysteries. A wonderful journey
full of surprise destinations, the meaning forever changing with
the passage of time. World, real and unreal, entwined, living and
breathing as one.
Such is the work of Hea-Sook Yoo, whose abstract images empower
the imagination of those who view them. The initial urge is to identify
shapes that are familiar and to link them together in a meaningful
way with the colors, forms and textures that surround them.
Suddenly a world appears out of nowhere. A world that is actually
right in front of us. It is a great message for us all, not only in art but
in life as well. If we take time to look closely at something, many
levels of understanding can be revealed.
